The Road Doesn't Go Both Ways

The Road Doesn't Go Both Ways

January 23, 2026 • Shop Talk

I have a rule in this business: The math has to math. But lately, when dealing with the logistics chain that supplies our inventory, the numbers just aren't adding up.

Customers often think that being an "Authorized Dealer" means we just open boxes and ship them out. If I did that, half of you would be receiving trash. My job isn't just to sell parts; it's to be the firewall between a broken distribution system and your project car.

Exhibit A: The $1,000 Piece of Tape

Last week, I tried to return a Nismo Clutch Kit to the Parts Distribution Center (PDC). It was dead weight on our shelf, and I wanted to swap it out to free up capital for parts you guys actually need.

The part was perfect. Factory fresh. The inner components were still sealed in their original air-tight Nissan packaging. Never bolted up, never touched.

The "Denied" Return: Perfect condition, sealed inner bags.

The Verdict? Denied.

They rejected the return because the outer box had been opened. That's it. Because the tape was cut, I lost $1,000 in return allowance. I explained that nothing was removed, nothing was damaged, and the part was 100% sellable. It didn't matter.

Exhibit B: What They Send Me

So, the standard is perfection, right? If I send them a box with cut tape, it's unacceptable.

But apparently, the road doesn't go both ways. This is the "New Inventory" I received on the dock today.

The "Approved" Shipment: Stained, crushed, and pre-labeled by the last victim.

This lamp arrived in a box that had clearly been soaked in water at some point. The cardboard is stained, warped, and falling apart. Inside? No packing material. Just a loose part rattling around.

The Smoking Gun: Look closely at the side of the box in the photos. See the sharpie writing that says "Need Right Side"?

We didn't write that. That was already on the box when it hit our dock today. That is undeniable proof that this part was opened, scribbled on, and returned by another dealer who couldn't figure out which side they needed. The PDC simply taped it up and shoved it back into the "New" pile to send to me.

The Double Standard

"I get penalized $1,000 for a clutch kit that was inspected but never touched. But they can send me a waterlogged, used box with someone else's handwriting on it?"

I have ordered sets of floor mats where 2 out of 3 boxes arrived missing a mat. I have seen "new" parts arrive that look like they sat in the rain for a week. And every time, I have to fight the claim process to get credit.

I don't share this to complain (okay, maybe a little). I share this to show you why we inspect everything. We deal with the headaches, the denials, and the "math that doesn't math" for one reason: So that when a box shows up at your door from NissanParts.cc, it’s right.

The road might not go both ways for the PDC, but it stops here.
